Africa's Cybersecurity Crisis: Rising Threats and Unchecked Vulnerabilities

Cyberattacks are increasingly targeting Africa, with South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, and Algeria emerging as prime targets for hackers. According to a recent report by cybersecurity firm Positive Technologies, South Africa alone accounted for 22% of all attacks on the continent between Q1 2023 and Q3 2024, making it the most-targeted African nation.

The Numbers Behind the Crisis

  • Dark Web Presence: South Africa dominated mentions on the dark web, with 25% of forum posts referencing the country, highlighting its status as a focal point for cybercriminals.
  • Financial and Government Entities at Risk: These sectors remain prime targets, with 22% of attacks proving successful. Breaches in South Africa's public diagnostic provider, trade commission, and intellectual property records in 2024 underscore the threat’s severity.
  • Economic Impact: Over the last decade, South Africa alone has lost an estimated R300 billion ($16.5 million) to cyberattacks, as revealed by Public Works Minister Dean Macpherson.

Advanced Tactics and Dark Web Collaboration

Hackers are leveraging advanced persistent threats (APTs) to infiltrate and remain undetected in data systems for extended periods. Worse, cybercriminals are forming dark web colonies, where they:

  • Share government and corporate data freely.
  • Sell access to African company networks for as little as $2,970 (R53,784).

Key Sectors Under Siege

  • Industrial and Telecom Sectors: Hackers increasingly target these sectors to steal sensitive information.
  • Notable Breaches: Nigeria’s Globacom suffered a debilitating DDoS attack in 2023, and South Africa’s Telkom experienced a significant data breach in September 2024.

The report highlights a disturbing trend: cybercriminals collaborating to maximize damage, sharing data freely as if united by a common goal. As these attacks grow in sophistication, African governments and corporations face mounting pressure to enhance their cybersecurity defenses.
